McCarthy edges Bandon past brave Dripsey

BANDON withstood a late Dripsey comeback before eventually prevailing at Brinny on Saturday evening.

Significant stoppages during the game saw seven minutes of added time being played and a draw looked on the cards when Dripsey centre-forward Diarmuid O’Riordan stood over a ‘65 at the death.

O’Riordan’s effort tailed wide, however, and all things considered, Bandon deserved the victory.

A scrappy opening half produced 1-9 in total, Bandon leading at the half-time whistle 1-4 to 0-5.

James McCarthy opened Bandon’s account and even though Diarmuid O’Riordan raised consecutive white flags for Dripsey, Bandon hit back with points from Roy Payne and Ronan Crowley.

Bandon substitute Mark Sugrue made an immediate impact on his introduction with a cleverly worked goal in the 25th minute involving Alan Johnson and Crowley.

The sides exchanged further points through David O’Sullivan and O’Riordan for Dripsey and Crowley for Bandon, two points then separating the sides.

Bandon goalkeeper James McSweeney denied Mark O’Sullivan with a point blank save before half-time and it was Dripsey who started brightly in the second-half.

Aidan Buckley pointed and a Diarmuid O’Riordan free levelled matters in the 37th minute at 1-4 to 0-7.

Crowley’s consistency from placed balls pushed Bandon three points clear and a combined effort from the Crowley brothers produced the side’s second goal on 45 minutes.

With 53 minutes played Bandon led 2-10 to 0-9 but a probing ball from Dripsey’s Pat O’Riordan ended up in the Bandon net.

A John Carey sideline found Gary Murphy on the edge of the square in the 61st minute and he doubled on it to rattle the Bandon net.

Darren Crowley looked to have settled Bandon nerves with a point in the 63rd minute but consecutive points from Mark O’Sullivan drew the sides level again.

However, Jason McCarthy’s 66th minute point proved the winner for Bandon and they advance to the quarter-final.
