Speaking after their spectacular victory over defeated Leinster finalists Wexford in Portlaoise on Saturday night, Lavin had some harsh words for a number of high profile pundits in particular.
He said: “I want to say this, and I want you to print it — screw all those people who have written us off.
“Martin McHugh saying we don’t deserve to be in the last eight, Pat Spillane saying we’re not a good enough team, sub-standard footballers — this win is a message to them.
“These guys haven’t a clue about Limerick football — what do they know about us? “They don’t see us in the league, they don’t read the paper — none of those know what we’re about.
“But we know what Limerick football is about. There’s 30 of us there giving our all and we say, screw the papers, they never give us a chance.
“Well, we proved them all wrong today, and I hope everybody reads this because I’m sick to death of those people never giving us credit.
“The likes of John Galvin (injured this year), five or six more of us playing for 10 or 11 years and never getting any recognition, but by Jesus they’d better give us some credit now.
“You never accept what those so-called experts say, you give it your all, you do it for your club, you do it for your county, you do it for your teammates, you do it for yourself.
“Something like this (reaching an All-Ireland quarter-final) will happen if you keep trying, and we’ve been trying for about five years now to get to this stage.
“I’m delighted for everyone who’s been a part of it. We all covered miles today, we just weren’t going to come out of here defeated. There have been too many times in the past where we lost a lead and came out on the wrong side of it. That wasn’t going to happen today. It’s just about attitude, about never giving up. This bunch of lads never gave up.
“They give their all, they do it for each other, they do it for Limerick.
“It’s all about character – you can go a long way with character. We showed what we’re made of today.”
