THE president of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) has expressed his confidence that the ugly scenes which marred the recent Tyrone county final were isolated and not part of a trend carried over from the men’s games.

Referee Simon Brady and county chairman Martin Conway were left unconscious after the ladies’ final between St McCartan’s of Augher and Carrickmore late last month, an incident all the more shocking because it occurred during a ladies game.

Such events are, unfortunately, more common in the male codes and, indeed, an umpire in Tipperary was attacked and a young footballer left unconscious after an off-the-ball clash during a game in San Francisco that same weekend.
