Local journalists, some recognised as oracles of the game in these parts, scratched their heads when asked to come up with a date when these two neighbours have done battle anywhere outside of Croke Park.

It’s a remarkable situation given the history between these two counties, the frequency with which they have faced each other in hurling combat since the GAA was formed over a century and a quarter ago.
