Mallow just pass Glenville test

The boys in red and yellow put in a workman like display as they dismissed their opponents with a clinical if unspectacular second-half display despite being reduced to 14 men.

Cian O’Riordan was the star of the show for the victors, kicking six of his side’s ten scores and dominating the game for long periods.

The left full-forward was at the heart of all that was good about his side’s play as he strutted his stuff all over the pitch.

O’Riordan wasn’t the only talent on show for the boys from the banks of the Blackwater as his team mates Joe Hayes and Clive Kerrisk also put in professional shifts.

Kerrisk, in particular, shone throughout the encounter as the overworked centre-back coped with all that was thrown at him.

Paudie Cahill was Glenville’s danger man as the nippy number 15 caused no end of problems for his opposite number. Cahill proved adept at converting from dead ball situations and was responsible for keeping his side in the tie till the end.

He was ably assisted in his endeavours by his fellow forwards, Jason Foley and Anthony Cronin, with the latter bagging the game’s only goal on 23 minutes.

Mallow dominated the first-half against the stiffening wind and raced into a 0-5 to 0-2 lead with just over a quarter of the game gone.

Cronin’s goal brought the side’s level before Mallow again took the lead on the stroke of half-time. The Avondhu boys, who started the second period leading by 0-7 to 1-3, received a real blow shortly after the interval as Hurl Dockry received his marching orders after a brawl involving several players.

Mallow fought back superbly after the loss and managed to dominate the rest of the session with their short passing style negating the shortcomings in their numbers.

Glenville will now need to look to the back door for salvation while the winners have a seven-week break before round four will require their attention.
