Kildorrery hold out after strong opening burst

Kildorrery 2-6 Cill na Martra 0-7

With blustery conditions threatening to ruin the game it was a case of who could handle the conditions better and the north Cork team answered it from the start as Tom Monaghan pointed in the first minute. Shortly afterwards Dave White blasted to the net from close range.

Their incredible start was the foundation they built on to claim a gutsy five-point victory.

Cill na Martra registered their first point on six minutes from top scorer Caoimhín Ó hUidhir but went another 26 minutes without a flag as Kildorrery settled into the game and could have had a second goal but David Kelly failed to get the ball over the line.

They did, however, add points from Andrew O’Brien and Monaghan as Kildorrery enjoyed the space afforded to them. They defended well too with Cormac Ó Baoil and Ritchie McEniry making courageous blocks.

As Cill na Martra’s wides tally increased they moved Nollaig Ó Laoire to midfield where he shored up a good deal of possession and two points late in the half from Ó Laoire and an Ó hUidhir free left them 0-3 to 1-3 in arrears.

Kildorrery goalkeeper Brendan Hannon played his part close to the break making a significant save, as did McEniry who cleared the rebound.

Cill na Martra made a few more alterations at the break but their hopes were dashed when Mike Monaghan poked the ball to the net after a huge punt by Shane Fitzgerald. In front by two goals, an arduous task awaited the Muskerry men.

They struck back with a brace of points from Ó hUidhir but Kildorrery never loosened their grip too much. David Kelly notched a tricky free as his brother Sean played his part at corner back with a couple of timely interventions.

Scores were at a premium on both sides but Kildorrery maintained their five-point lead. Nollaig Ó Laoire worked tirelessly from defence to attack but their only reward was a white flag from Caoimhín Ó Suilleabháin.

Kildorrery were doing their best to hold on and they managed to put the final nail in the Cill na Martra coffin when Eamonn O’Connor pointed. Cill na Martra, who had Donal Óg Ó Laoire red-carded near the end, take on the losers of Éire Óg/Cloyne in round two.
