O’Riordan leads the way for Muskerry

TWO wins out of two now for Muskerry in the Divisions section of the Cork SHC.

However, in the end it was not as comfortable as they would have liked. Last evening in Páirc Ui Rinn the mid Cork representatives came out on top against an Imokilly side that was making its first appearance in this competition having eased 10 points clear on 40 minutes. But when Imokilly applied the pressure late on, they were forced to hang on.

Muskerry just about got over the line and having already accounted for Duhallow, and with Avondhu to play, are in a good position now to secure either a winner or runner-up position against CIT or UCC.

Muskerry made a few alterations strengthening their hand considerably from their previous round two weeks ago – most notable was the inclusion of Dripsey’s top marksman Diarmuid O’Riordan who tallied 1-4 from his centre forward post as well as the selection of Kerry hurler Colin Harris at left corner back.

Muskerry hurled well in the opening half. They led by double scores at the break and most pleasing for their management was the contribution of no less than eight players to that scoreline.

The aforementioned O’Riordan as well as Mark Cremin and Shane Sexton landed early points while Imokilly struggled to find their rhythm.

Cremin was on target with a huge point to give Muskerry a four point advantage before Eoin Conway and Trevor O’Keeffe narrowed the gap – Conway was later forced off injured after just 21 minutes.

The mid Cork side fought back though, sparked by the excellent play of wingback Niall Buckley and Tom Kenny who was making strides at midfield.

They moved 0-10 to 0-5 in front five minutes before the break before Buckley fired over a huge point and a Cremin free pushed them further ahead which yielded a deserving seven point cushion.

However, tenacious play from the hard-working O’Keeffe helped Imokilly narrow the margin to six points, 0-12 to 0-6 as the teams went to the dressing-room.

Muskerry went on to enjoy their best spell after the interval.

O’Riordan took his goal brilliantly 10 minutes after the re-start when he sidestepped his marker before firing an unstoppable drive to the top corner of the net.

As their dominance increased they tapped over points to comfortably take over with the score board reading 1-16 to 0-9.

But, Imokilly as they have often done in the past, launched a mighty comeback. Leo Sexton got in for a goal, as a result of very slack marking from Muskerry, and a flurry of points from Shane Cotter, Bill Cooper and Paddy Regan arrived in a five minute spell.

Imokilly were battling hard. Goalkeeper Ciaran Cronin came up field to take a close-in free, but luckily for Muskerry it was tipped over the bar. Imokilly managed to reduce the deficit to two points before Cremin settled Muskerry’s nerves by knocking over a crucial free.

Muskerry had to endure some anxious moments as Imokilly were awarded a 30 metre free but the mid Cork defence held out to eventually clear their lines in a pulsating finish.
