O’Shea out of Mayo clash with Monaghan

MAYO’S Aidan O’Shea has been ruled out of Sunday’s Division One game against Monaghan after picking up a hand injury in their win over Cork in Castlebar on Sunday.

The Breaffy player’s hand has been put in a cast as a precautionary measure. But it is not envisaged he faces an extended spell on the sidelines and is expected to be back training next week.

Meanwhile, Kerry boss John Kennedy remains hopeful attacker Barry John Walsh will be able to shake off an injury to be sprung from the bench during tomorrow night’s Munster U21FC final against Cork.

“Barry John is responding well to treatment after straining his hamstring in a club game last Sunday week. He has made improvements and while not enough to start, he was able to take part in a light session on Sunday night.

“We’ll have a look at him against before Wednesday.”

Cork manager John Cleary has kept faith with the starting side that defeated Tipperary for the clash in Páirc Ui Rinn. Despite introducing five substitutes, Cleary has resisted the temptation to alter the team. Cleary can call on six of the side that played in the corresponding game between the counties at minor level three years ago with Peter Daly, Aidan Walsh, Ciarán Sheehan, Mark Collins, Barry O’Driscoll and Paul Honohan all starting. Cork substitutes Eoghan Buckley and Shane Beston also featured in that game.

Wexford manager Kevin Kehoe has also announced an unchanged side for their Leinster U21 final against Longford in Portlaoise tomorrow. Michael Furlong who came into the side at corner-back against Carlow, retains his place. Senior stars Liam Óg McGovern, Conor McCarthy and Kevin O’Grady are all in the starting line-up.
