Donnellan, Kildare’s minor goalkeeper last year, scored the only point of the second period of extra-time to see off the challenge of a spirited Schull Community College from West Cork at Sean Treacy Park.
Donnellan starred at midfield before injury forced his switch to full-forward, but it didn’t lessen his scoring exploits.
Maynooth worked hard to make up for their 2008 All-Ireland final defeat, coming from six points down in the final 11 minutes to force extra-time. Donnellan began the revival with a 49th minute penalty before sub Ciarán Kearney netted two minutes from time to tie the scores, 2-6 to 1-9.
The sides shared six points in the first period of extra-time before Callaghan settled the tie with an 80th minute effort.
The sides had been level four times, including at half-time when they were deadlocked at 0-4 apiece. But Schull, who recovered from going 0-1 to 0-4 behind, held Maynooth scoreless from the 23rd to 49th minutes as they tacked on 1-4, including a goal by Gerald O’Callaghan.
But Maynooth held their nerve to claim the big prize and leave Pat Winders and his fellow selectors elated. Winders gasped: “It was never gone with these lads. We’ve lost big finals in extra-time at U14 and U16 to last minute goals. We said today after coming from six points down that no way was it going to happen.”
Schull selector Edward Sheehy admitted: “We had a brilliant year but to lose by a point is devastating.”
