Bumper weekend kick-starts clubs’ SFC aspirations

REIGNING Cork senior football champions Nemo Rangers will begin the defence of their title on May 7 with a first round tie against Ballincollig in Ovens.

The clash will be one of eight first round county SFC ties to take place that weekend with Carbery Rangers and Ilen Rovers commencing the programme the previous evening on May 6 in Kilmacabea.

Last season’s PIFC champions Newcestown will play last year’s senior finalists St Finbarr’s in their opening game at senior level on May 8 in Ballygarvan.

The defending county senior hurling winners Sarsfields will face Cloyne in their opening championship tie on June 4 in Carrigtwohill. The senior championship commences the night before with two opening round ties between Erins Own and St Finbarr’s in Páirc Ui Chaoimh while Bride Rovers take on Na Piarsaigh in Watergrasshill. Recent All-Ireland club intermediate champions Ballymartle make their bow at senior level in Mallow against Newtownshandrum on June 4th.

Midleton will face Bishopstown on Friday June 10th despite protests by their delegate Pat Horgan over the unavailability of three players due to the Leaving Cert.

It was also announced at the meeting that Carrigtwohill’s Peter Hogan is set to step down as chairman of Coiste na nÓg, due to work commitments. The vacancy is set to be filled by current County Board Youth Officer Marc Sheehan for the remainder of the 2011 campaign. The responsibility for implementing the Garda Vetting programme will fall to current County Board Cultural Officer Liam O’Laochdha.
