Donegal’s McLoone has broken leg

DONEGAL’S league and championship hopes have been dealt a blow with the news that centre-back Leo McLoone has broken a leg in a club game.

The 21-year-old is due to undergo surgery tomorrow in the Beacon Hospital in Dublin having suffered the injury in a Comortas Peile na Gaeltachta game between his club Naomh Conaill and Termon on Sunday.

“The ankle is broken and to make matters worse and to compound the injury he also dislocated the ankle,” said Donegal manager Jimmy McGuinness.

“He is due to undergo surgery in Dublin on Wednesday and will be in a cast for eight weeks and then it will be a matter of doing rehab.”

Meanwhile, Tipperary have named four members of last year’s provincial-winning side for the defence of their title in tomorrow night’s Munster U21 FC quarter-final against Waterford in Dungarvan.

Left corner-back Robbie Kiely, midfielder Peter Acheson, left half-forward Aldo Matassa and right corner-forward Conor Sweeney are the survivors from that starting XV, while centre-forward Thomas Hanly was introduced as a substitute in the final win over Kerry.

Limerick boss Maurice Horan has named five senior players in his side for tomorrow night’s Munster U21 FC quarter-final against Clare in the Gaelic Grounds.

The quintet selected to face the Banner boys are goalkeeper Brian Scanlon, full-back Mike Sheehan, right half-forward Seamus O’Carroll, centre-forward James Kelly and left corner-forward Eoghan O’Connor.
