Dalton goal secures Críost Rí’s safe passage

A GOAL and a point in the closing minutes gave Coláiste Chríost Rí victory in a highly entertaining Corn Uí Mhuirí tie at Cloughduv yesterday.

The goal came after the winners had surrendered a six points lead and looked set to miss out on the knock-out stages. However, sub Ciarán Dalton finished a great passing movement to the net and Luke Connolly’s point ensured the Capwell side’s progression to the last eight.

It would have been a travesty had they lost this game which they dominated from the off.

The game was notable for the outstanding fielding of Ciarán Dalton and Fachtna’s Brian O’Driscoll while Críost Rí’s Conor Hogan scored six points from placed balls.

The city school stormed into a four points to nil lead after 10 minutes and they held that advantage for most of the half until Brian O’Driscoll, Fachtna’s best player, landed a great point to leave three between them at the break (0-7 to 0-4).

By the end of the third quarter, Críost Ri led 0-12 to 0-6, primarily due to Horgan’s dead ball accuracy as he punished the Fachtna’s backs for conceding needless frees.

That advantage might have been more but for a brilliant save by Fachtna’s goalkeeper Paddy Rossiter from Luke Connolly.

Needing a win to reach the knockout stages, Fachtna’s put in a storming 10 minute spell which yielded three points in a row.

Maintaining the pressure due to the excellence of O’Driscoll and Tomás Hegarty, the Skibbereen school were awarded a questionable penalty with nine minutes to go which O’Driscoll converted to tie the game.

The momentum was now with the West Cork side and they grabbed the lead for the first time after a Jack Bushe point.

However, the City side drew inspiration from a superb block by Tomás Lawrence which broke up a Fachtna’s attack. Conor Horgan set off on a great run which ended with Dalton slotting to the net and restoring his side’s lead.

That goal knocked the heart out of Fachtna’s and Connolly landed a 45’ for the insurance point.
