Forward power fires Tralee into last eight
The result means the Kerry school and Corca Dhuibhne are the two teams to go through to the last eight from this group.
The Kerry students had many stars but two-goal hero Shane O’Callaghan, top-scorer James Moriarty (1-8) and Niall Sheehy were the standout trio.
The gap between the teams was exacerbated with St Colman’s failing to register a score in the opening 30 minutes.
Tralee CBS dominated from the throw-in and it was evident after just three minutes that there was only going to be one result when classy number 14 Moriarty shrugged off two players to score a fine goal. By the quarter hour they were ahead 1-5 to no score. The Tralee defence was totally on top and with the ball continuously coming back down field, the likes of Sheehy, Sean Walsh (brother of Tommy) and Moriarty could do no wrong.
Laurence Bastible and John C O’Connor were others to give eye-catching displays for the winners and played a part in Shane O’Callaghan’s goal on 21 minutes. In fairness to St Colman’s they kept trying but their finishing was poor. The Kerry team could have had a third goal before the break but for a block by Gary O’Callaghan.
Facing a 2-11 to nil deficit, St Colman’s exercise was in damage limitation but they notched the opening point from Morrison and had another two before Tralee shot four without reply, including two from sub Dan Carroll. The Cork lads joy was shortlived when O’Callaghan touched home Tralee’s third goal to make it 3-17 to 0-3 on 50 minutes. Michael Pyne had a late goal for Fermoy school but it was mere consolation.
