While Colman’s were good value for their victory, it was hard-earned against an opposition that battled bravely to the end.
The Cork school, backed by the strong wind in the opening half, led by six points, 0-10 to 0-4, at the break, largely thanks to Pa Roche at wing-back and the Spillane brothers, Colm and Michael, at midfield and wing-forward respectively.
The losers were reliant the free-taking of Cathal Curran in the opening spell, but when Colin Dunford, Conor O’Shea and Curran all found the range within six minutes of the restart the margin had been halved.
The magnificence of Kieran Power at centre-back also added to the difficulties for St. Colman’s, but to their credit they never panicked.
An exchange of points between Noel McNamara and Donal Breathnach left just one score between them before it fell to Hogan in the 45th minute to crash home the game’s only goal.
Waterford Colleges laid siege to the Colman’s goal in the frenetic closing minutes but a resolute defence held firm.
