Celbridge fail to make quarter-finals

CELBRIDGE were the major casualties after the round-robin series of the Pfizer Kildare senior football championship concluded on Saturday.

Needing a win to make the top eight, their 1-13 each draw with Allenwood knocked them out of the reckoning.

That point was enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals for the Blues, who were inspired by Johnny Doyle.

They finished fourth of the 16 teams after the four rounds, just behind Moorefield, 3-7 to 0-10 winners over Carbury.

Holders St Laurence’s moved through comfortably, maintaining their 100% record with a 1-13 to 0-11 win over Round Towers.

That wasn’t enough to put them top of the table though, with Sarsfields also victorious in their tie against last year’s Leinster intermediate champions Maynooth, 0-10 to 1-5.

Maynooth edged out neighbours Leixlip for the last quarter-final spot courtesy of a superior score difference of just two points, with the line-up being completed by Kilcock, Athy, Naas and Maynooth.

Round Towers, Ellistown, Suncroft and Clane must face a relegation battle and the draw for that play-off and the championship quarter-finals takes place tonight.
