O Muircheartaigh’s decision to hang up the microphone after 61 years of commentary comes in a changing time in RTÉ. Whereas most of O Muircheartaigh’s career was exclusively for a radio audience, the new breed of sports broadcaster in Donnybrook is working across their three platforms – radio, television and the internet.

Take this year’s championships as an example with seasoned television commentators Ger Canning, Darragh Maloney, Marty Morrissey used on a regular basis to call games on RTÉ Radio One alongside Brian Carthy, Adrian Eames and Pauric Lodge.
