Browne rolls back the years

IT’S been a while since he has been introduced as ‘the young Tony Browne’ but yesterday Waterford manager Davy Fitzgerald name checked the county’s veteran defender as such.

Browne rolls back the years

A week after his 37th birthday, the former Hurler of the Year, turned back the clock in glorious fashion with a stunning goal to draw yesterday’s enthralling Munster SHC final with Cork. It was the first time he hit the net in championship hurling since the equivalent decider against Tipperary in 2002 as Waterford went onto win the county’s first provincial senior title since 1963.

“It’s a long time, eight years, to wait to score a goal,” he smiled. ” But it couldn’t have come at a better time. When Eoin’s drive was stopped the ball hopped up nicely for me and I just took a swipe. I didn’t know where it would end up. I can’t tell you how relieved I was when I saw the net rattling.”
