Surprise Premier debut for O’Meara

MICHAEL CAHILL and Brian O’Meara will make their championship debuts for Tipperary in Sunday’s Munster SHC quarter-final against Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Thurles Sarsfields player Cahill starts at left half-back, while Kilruane McDonaghs attacker O’Meara is named at full-forward by manager Liam Sheedy.

O’Meara’s introduction is the big talking point in the team selection as he was only drafted into the Tipperary panel earlier this month and Sunday will be his first senior competitive appearance for the county.

Cahill, who won two All-Ireland minor medals in 2006 and 2007, featured regularly during this year’s NHL and was also a Fitzgibbon Cup medal winner with UCC last year. The introduction of Cahill and O’Meara means Tipperary field 13 of the team that started last year’s All-Ireland final defeat against Kilkenny, with injury victims James Woodlock and Pat Kerwick the two players missing.

There are three positional changes from that game with Brendan Maher moving to midfield, Noel McGrath switching to right half-forward and Eoin Kelly going to right corner-forward.

Galway boss John McIntyre has made one change for tomorrow night’s Leinster SHC quarter-final against Wexford in Nowlan Park from the team that claimed NHL Division 1 honours against Cork at the start of this month.

Joe Gantley comes into the side at left corner-forward instead of Iarla Tannian with Gantley making his starting championship debut.

There are three other championship debutantes in right half-back Donal Barry, midfielder David Burke and right corner-forward Aidan Harte.

Wexford manager Colm Bonnar has handed out two championship debuts for tomorrow night’s Leinster SHC quarter-final against Galway in Nowlan Park. Noel Carton takes the goalkeeper position and Lar Prendergast is selected at right corner-back.

Bonnar has made two changes from the side that defeated Clare in the NHL Division 2 final earlier this month, with Prendergast replacing the injured Paul Roche and Michael Jacob in at right half-forward in place of Andrew Shore.
