IT was a curious state the Cork footballers found themselves in at the close of play of last Saturday night in Páirc Uí Rinn.

A cursory glance at the scoreboard would have indicated a fine evening’s work had been accomplished as Cork triumphed against Galway by 1-19 to 1-17, a result that maintained their pristine record in the NFL and left them vying with Dublin for top spot in the Division One table.

But there was a negative in all the positive vibes emanating from their camp. The win had been achieved after a performance plagued with inconsistencies, as supreme spells of dominance were mixed with periods where they leaked scores. And that’s not an isolated incident as far as Cork are concerned, more part of a growing trend that has framed their recent performances.
