Walsh poised to make debut for St Kilda

TOMMY WALSH will make his competitive debut in the AFL tomorrow, with St Kilda naming him in their squad for the NAB Cup opener against Collingwood and head coach Ross Lyon promising a likely substitute’s role because he has “surpassed expectations”.

Walsh poised to make debut for St Kilda

Man of the match as Kerry won the All-Ireland final last September, Walsh has created a very positive impression since landing at the Melbourne club.

He played his first full game of Aussie Rules in an intra-club hitout last Friday and, while his impact was minimal, Lyon and the rest of the coaching staff see the pre-season tournament as an opportunity to give their first year international rookie some invaluable experience.

Although the Saints are resting midfield stars Nick Dal Santo, Lenny Hayes and Jason Gram, they have named a very strong squad, with star forward and captain Nick Riewoldt, Justin Koschitzke, Steven King and Ben McEvoy set to take part.

Lyon is hoping that an appearance at this level will accelerate what is a steep learning process for Walsh, as the Tralee native grapples with the oval ball and learning the intricacies of Aussie Rules.

“He has surpassed expectations considering where he was from” said Lyon. “His ability to kick the ball and withstand the loads; going from amateur level to professional level, he hasn’t missed a session. We’re pretty keen to give him a chance. We know he’ll crash and bash at 196cm and 102kg. I hope he doesn’t crash into our players but he is exciting and he really is by definition a first round athlete.

“The question is how quickly we can bring him up to speed with Aussie Rules? He’ll get a look-in, probably as a substitute player.”

Walsh has built up a cult following amongst St Kilda supporters since his arrival, with huge cheers attending his every touch at Moorabbin training sessions, while the former young footballer of the year has integrated well with his new team-mates, who have taken to calling him Ivan, after a character in Rocky IV.
