Dunning again in London frame

OUTGOING London senior football team manager Noel Dunning has revealed he is among the nominations for the vacant post as county board officials continue to push for a three-man selection team.

Dunning again in London frame

Westmeath native Dunning, who served as boss for the last five years, is seeking a sixth season at the helm and claims to have the full backing of clubs and players.

But in a dramatic development, county board top brass have decided to appoint a three-man selection team to oversee team affairs next season, with no manager in place.

This move has angered London’s players but hasn’t stopped Dunning from throwing his hat in the ring again. The London County Board received a number of nominations prior to last Monday’s deadline and will reveal the identities of their preferred trio on December 7.

Dunning is hopeful that his name will be considered but following a very public war of words with chairman Tommy Harrell, he could be overlooked.

Dunning admitted: “I don’t know what will happen. Whether the clubs speak up on the night, I don’t know.

“As things stand, I have been nominated, by nine or 10 out of the 20-odd football clubs while some hurling clubs nominated me as well.”

It is understood Dunning’s former selectors Liam Brennan and Martin McGrath have also received nominations.

Dunning has also dismissed speculation that London will play no part in next year’s league and championship but admitted that he is unsure how the players stand at this point.

He said: “There’s no chance of us being kicked out of the league and championship. It’s not all doom and gloom and I’m sure that it will be sorted over the next couple of weeks.”

He confirmed: “I would be prepared to work in a three-man set-up but that would depend on the circumstances and who I’m working with. The players are entirely their own group and I won’t be influencing what they do.

“They would much rather have a manager than a three-man committee but who that manager will be, I don’t know. I would hope it is me.

“It all depends if they (county board) have any more nominations. If they feel there are three better than me, there’s not a lot I can do.”
