McCarthy makes Kingdom return

MIKE McCARTHY plays his first competitive game for Kerry since the All-Ireland final back in September 2006 after being handed the number six jersey by Kerry boss Jack O’Connor for tomorrow’s home qualifier against Sligo in Tralee.

McCarthy, who only joined the squad over a month ago, might have been seen as a solution to Kerry’s problematic full-back spot, but he will play at centre-back.

Marc O Sé drops back to corner-back, while Aidan O’Mahony plays instead of Aidan O’Shea, with Killian Young giving way for McCarthy.

Up front Paul Galvin returns after suspension instead of Kieran Donaghy with Donnacha Walsh changing wings and Sean O’Sullivan moving to the left corner, with free taking being a major consideration for the Cromane sharpshooter retaining his place.

Tyrone captain Brian Dooher makes his first start since last September’s All-Ireland final triumph over Kerry in Sunday’s Ulster SFC final against Antrim. Dooher’s inclusion in the half forward line is the only change from the semi-final defeat of Derry.

Sean Cavanagh moves from full-forward to partner Kevin Hughes at midfield, due to the hamstring injury that has ruled out Enda McGinley. Joe McMahon has recovered from a rib injury sustained in the semi-final win over Derry, and will wear the number 12 shirt, although his exact role is uncertain.

McGinley is listed in the subs, and has expressed his desire to play some part in the game. But for Cavanagh, the move back to the central area is one he will relish.

Antrim, as expected, have announced an unchanged side from that which scored a shock win over Cavan in the semi final.

Wexford manager, Jason Ryan has made two changes for his side’s All-Ireland SFC qualifier replay with Roscommon at Dr Hyde Park tomorrow. Adrian Morrissey and Eric Bradley are drafted in to replace Kieran Kennedy and Brendan Doyle.

Captain John Gardiner returns to the Cork team for tomorrow’s All-Ireland SHC qualifier with Galway at Semple Stadium, while Ben O’Connor is also named in the side.

Gardiner missed Cork’s victory over Offaly last time out because of a neck injury but resumes in his customary right half back slot.

Newtownshandrum ace O’Connor, who limped out of the Offaly game with a hamstring injury, is selected at right half forward.

The return of Gardiner means Tom Kenny reverts back to midfield in place of Graham Callinan, while the other change sees Patrick Horgan taking over the left corner forward position from Tadgh Óg Murphy.

Galway have been forced to make one change from the side that triumphed over Clare last weekend, left half back Adrian Cullinane ruled out with a leg injury. Ger Farragher is introduced at midfield with Eoin Lynch moving back to fill the void in the half back line.

Team captain Ollie Canning, who was injured in the Clare game has been passed fit.

Limerick will be without Niall Moran because of an injury he sustained in last weekend’s victory over Wexford for tomorrow’s All-Ireland SHC qualifier with Laois in Thurles.

Moran’s place at left half forward is allocated to Paul Browne, with Tom Condon coming into the side at left corner back and Mike O’Brien named on the 40.
