Harty draw unkind to Kerry newcomers
In an effort to promote hurling in the county, a combined team of Kerry Colleges has been entered, but the draw for the groups hasn’t exactly been kind to the newcomers.
They have been paired with St Flannan’s, West Waterford Colleges and DLS Waterford in Group B and, with the top two to advance to the quarter-finals, it’s a massive ask of the Kerry team.
Sixteen teams have entered, an increase of two on last year, but there are a number of notable absentees, Ard Scoil Rís, Carrigaline Community School and Coláiste na Trionóide Youghal all dropping down a grade.
Tipperary’s representation in the Harty Cup has increased by one to four with the inclusion of Cashel CBS while, significantly, Cork has increased its numbers by two with Charleville CBS and Coláiste An Spioraid Naoimh making a welcome return.
The groups for the coming season are:
A - St. Caimin’s, Doon CBS, Blackwater College, Our Lady’s.
B - St. Flannan’s, Kerry Colleges, West Waterford Colleges, DLS Waterford.
C - Thurles CBS, CSN, Nenagh CBS, Charleville CBS.
D - Ard Scoil Rís, Midleton CBS, St. Colman’s, Cashel CBS.
The first round is down for Wednesday, October 7 and will be played on a Round Robin basis initially. The top two from each group go forward to the quarter-finals.
IN the Corn Uí Mhuirí there is a decrease of one school, Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig dropping down a grade.
As a consequence both St Flannan’s and Coláiste Chorcha Duibhne are guaranteed their places in the last eight but will play each other to decide which team tops the group.
The groups are:
A - Intermediate School Killorglin, Abbey CBS, Tralee CBS.
B - Coláiste na Sceilge, DLS Macroom, Coláiste Chríost Rí
C - St. Brendan’s, St. Fachtna’s, St. Colman’s
D - St. Flannan’s, Coláiste Chorcha Duibhne.
First round games are fixed for October 14 and played on a Round Robin basis initially, the top two teams qualifying for the knock out stages.
IN Cork, the draws for the senior football “A” championship (Simcox Cup) are:
September 18 – First Round: A: DLS Macroom v CBS
