DAN SHANAHAN’S refusal to shake hands with Justin McCarthy in the Gaelic Grounds last June was one of the summer’s most iconic moments but the former Hurler of the Year has insisted that he has a perfectly good relationship with the Corkman.

There were eight minutes remaining in the Munster Championship match against Clare, which Waterford went on to lose by nine points, when Shanahan neglected to take McCarthy’s proffered hand having been called to the line.

Twelve months on it stands as the visual symbol of the fracturing relationshipbetween the players and their former manager who will be patrolling the sideline for Limerick on Sunday at Semple Stadium against his former team.
