Hynes earns starting place as Tribesmen begin life in Leinster

FORMER U21 All-Ireland winning captain Kevin Hynes makes his championship debut for Galway on Sunday when they take on Laois in the Leinster SHC at Portlaoise.

Hynes, who skippered Galway to the U21 crown in 2007, missed last year’s championship after breaking his jaw playing for his club Sarsfields.

He is the only debutant for the Tribesmen on Sunday, although Aonghus Callanan will start his first championship match for Galway, having come on as a sub at this level.

The team contains five members of the victorious Portumna side who have captured the All-Ireland club title for the past two years.

Ollie Canning will captain the side, which shows six changes from that which went down to Cork in the All-Ireland qualifiers on a 0-23 to 2-15 scoreline, with younger brother Joe at full-forward.

Andy Smith will partner Hynes in midfield, while in attack Damian Hayes will start at top of the right with cousin Kevin Hayes at centre-forward.

John Lee, who opted out of the league campaign to concentrate on his medical studies, is selected at centre-back.

There is no place in the Galway attack for former All-Star Ger Farragher or Alan Kerins, who was recently recalled to the panel.

Manager John McIntyre is hoping his side can hit the ground running after getting a nasty wake-up call from Waterford in a challenge match last week.

“The players have upped the ante since our second-half performance against Waterford.

“I anticipated Waterford would be further down the track in their preparations but it was no harm to see this first hand for both the players and management,” said McIntyre.

Offaly have chosen the same starting 15 for their Leinster SHC game versus Wexford on Saturday as that which started in the NHL Division Two final against the same opposition.

Roscommon manager Fergal O’Donnell has handed Peter Domican and Paul Kelly their Championship debuts for Sunday’s Connacht SFC clash with Leitrim at Carrick-on-Suir while injury doubts Paul Gleeson and David Keenan are included in the subs.

Domican is selected at right full-back with Kelly filling the left corner-back position. Both Seamus O’Neill and Cathal Cregg were not considered because of injury.

Leitrim introduce four newcomers to senior championship football: James Glancy, Colm Clarke, Tomás Beirne and Ray Cox.

Glancy has been named at left half-back, Clarke and Beirne in the half-forward line and Cox at top of the right.

Attacker Colm McCullogh has been ruled out of the Tyrone team for their opening Ulster SFC game with Armagh on Sunday because of a leg injury.

Doubts also surround the availability of midfielder Enda McGinley because of a finger injury, Ryan Mellon (ankle), Brian Dooher (groin), Brian McGuigan (hamstring), and Stephen O’Neill (knee).

Armagh report a clean bill of health and both teams are due to be unveiled tonight.
