THE Gaelic Players Association is surveying its members to discover if they would favour the abolition of provincial championships and the creation of an open draw format.

GPA Chief Executive Dessie Farrell confirmed he is expecting feedback on the issue from inter-county players affiliated to the body in the next couple of weeks and suggested provincial competitions was now a redundant concept.

The former Dublin forward cited the Ulster Championship as an example of how teams have become “over familiar”, leading to the unseemly incidents between Monaghan and Derry at Celtic Park.
