Westmeath boss plans Glennon talks

WESTMEATH manager Tomás O Flatharta is set to have talks with his star forward Denis Glennon about his absence from the Westmeath football panel since training resumed in the past two weeks.

Glennon – who was top scorer in each of Westmeath’s seven games in Division One of the NFL campaign, finishing with a total of 1-30 for the seven games – was missing when Westmeath played a challenge game against Cavan last Saturday evening in Mullingar.

Following the conclusion of Westmeath’s disastrous Division One campaign in which the Lake County lost all seven matches, the Westmeath players return to their clubs to play the club championships first round before resuming training with the county in preparation for the forthcoming Leinster Championship game against Longford or Cavan.

When questioned about the absence of Denis Glennon from the Westmeath panel for the challenge match, O Flatharta replied: “The situation with Denis is that he hasn’t resumed training yet, but I’m going to be talking to Denis in the next couple of days to get some more clarity on the situation.”

However, the Kerryman was very quick to clarify that there had been no rift between Glennon and himself, telling the Westmeath Topic: “We are getting on fine, it’s just Denis has a number of work commitments and we are just going to have a chat about the situation,” concluded O Flatharta.

Dessie Dolan, Donal O’Donoghue and David O’Shaughnessy all played their part in the challenge game against Cavan and Damien Healy is set to return to the squad after deciding to travel abroad following Westmeath’s exit to Tyrone in the qualifiers last year.

However, the inspirational Glennon had played all through the winter when other players were absent and in a similar situation last year the Tyrrellspass man took a break from the panel before resuming for the championship matches.
