Louth without Hoey for Carlow clash

LOUTH attacker Aaron Hoey has been ruled out of his county’s Leinster SFC opener against Carlow at Parnell Park next Sunday after tearing a hamstring in training over the weekend.

Wee County manager Eamonn McEneaney confirmed the news last night and indicated that the experienced Hoey could be sidelined for up to a month. “It happened during a training game at the weekend. The injury hit Aaron out of the blue and it will be three or four weeks before he can start training again.”

McEneaney is also monitoring the fitness of versatile defender Padraig Rath (achilles tendon) and midfielder Paddy Keenan (hamstring). McEneaney recently called U21 players Gareth Moran and Sean McCann into his squad while DCU’s Conor Rafferty is another addition to the set-up.

Meanwhile Galway goalkeeper James Skehill has emerged as major doubt for their Leinster SHC opener against Laois on May 31 after breaking a finger during a trial game on Sunday in Ballinasloe.

The Cappataggle clubman is awaiting the result of a scan on his right index finger to confirm the breakage. It’s Skehill’s second major injury this year after a broken shoulder sustained while in action for Limerick IT in a challenge game last January ruled him out of the National Hurling league.

The GAA announced yesterday that Masita Ireland has been granted an Official GAA Kit License which will allow the company to produce playing attire in for clubs, schools and colleges. GAA President Christy Cooney congratulated the company on the occasion of the award of their license and lauded their efforts to create Irish jobs.

“We welcome Masita into the GAA licensing family and congratulate them on the granting of their license. The company has proved that it can work with the GAA while adhering to our rules and their work with us will see them create employment in Ireland.”

Meanwhile Cork minor football boss Mick Slocum has made two changes for his side’s Munster semi-final tie against Tipperary in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Wednesday night. William O’Mahony comes into the team at left half-back with Sean Finn dropping to the bench, while David Nation is selected at right half-forward in place of Ger Minihane.

Kerry have made three changes for their semi-final clash with Clare in Austin Stack Park, Tralee on Wednesday night. Matthew Galvin comes into the side at right corner-back, alongside his twin brother Phillip at full-back with Padraig O’Connor making way.

Declan Doody replaces Max Thiemann at midfield, while Coláiste na Sceilge star Ian Galvin is selected at wing-forward with Jack Sherwood moving into the centre at the expense of the injured Damien Kelly.

The Kerry substitutes is notable for the inclusion of Jamie O’Sullivan, who was a member of last year’s minor side, but was sidelined with a hamstring injury for Kerry’s quarter-final triumph over Tipperary.

Clare have made just the one change for this match, with Darragh Sexton introduced at right half-forward, Shane Brennan going out to midfield and Alan Malone dropping down to the bench.
