AFL agent Nixon in crash incident
Nixon ploughed his Alfa Romeo into a tram in the city’s Swan Street on Wednesday night, left the scene and took a taxi home with over 200 people looking on.
According to media reports in Australia, Nixon returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.108 — more than twice the legal limit — after police knocked on his door and took him down to the local station for questioning.
He was released without charge but a police spokeswoman confirmed that investigations were continuing.
Nixon faces possible charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
Witnesses said yesterday he had made no attempt to avoid the tram in the busy Richmond street.
“He didn’t take any evasive action,” one witness told the Ten Network. “He hit it straight on.”
The 45-year-old suffered fractures to a hand, abrasions to his arms and possibly has cracked ribs. No one else was in the car at the time of the crash.
Nixon has managed several footy stars who found themselves on the wrong side of the law. He is handling confessed drug user Ben Cousins’ much-hyped comeback with Richmond and was also in charge of Wayne Carey’s affairs during much of his turbulent AFL career.
Nixon has infuriated GAA chiefs with his plans to seek out and sign the best and brightest young footballers in the country.
He was due to attend the Sigerson Cup in Cork IT last weekend — but failed to show.
Meanwhile it appears some AFL clubs are turning their backs on Ireland for recruitment in favour of New Zealand.
The Hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney and North Melbourne clubs head to Christchurch this weekend for an Under-20 Aussie Rules tournament carnival. Those clubs have not been major players in the Irish market for Gaelic footballers, and some within the AFL view New Zealand as a potential new source of players.
Accordingly, the AFL is encouraging clubs to invest in the Rules game in countries like New Zealand, South Africa and Fiji.
