Few highlights as young Rebels get better of St Colman’s stars

ANYONE in the crowd of more than 3,000 in Fermoy yesterday expecting fireworks was sorely disappointed.

Gerald McCarthy’s Cork development squad edged out a star-studded Colman’s side by a single point but the game never caught fire, and those predicting apocalyptic scenes all week were disappointed.

There were no flash points and no controversies, though the bitter cold probably contributed to the subdued atmosphere.

The youngsters in red goaled early on through Michael Collins and led 1-5 to 1-3 at the break, Eoin Fitzgerald scrambling home the Colman’s goal.

The All Stars rattled off three points on the turnover (from Andrew O’Shaughnessy, Neil Ronan and Mark Landers, indicating the talent at their disposal), but when Cian McCarthy’s free found the net, Cork regained the lead and never lost it, holding out as the past pupils pressed late on for an equaliser.

In a game dominated by the strong wind blowing away from the entrance gate, Cork boss Gerald McCarthy will be happy with goalkeeper Alan Kennedy and free-taker Cian McCarthy.

Mark Landers and Fergal McCormack both rolled back the years for Colman’s, while Timmy McCarthy worked hard also. Ironically the inter-county manager who might have profited most from yesterday was new Dublin boss Anthony Daly. Eoin Fitzgerald, once of Castlelyons and now with Kilmacud Crokes in the capital, caught the eye up front for the side in white and green.

St Colman’s captain Timmy McCarthy said afterwards: “It was a huge occasion for Colman’s, especially for the likes of us who’ve been out of the college for years. To get back and meet each other was great, the likes of Andrew O’Shaughnessy and Stephen Molumphy we only meet on championship days, so it was great to see them here again.”
