First title gives Mullane taste for more ‘champagne’ wins

DE LA SALLE captain John Mullane hopes yesterday’s Waterford SHC title win will be the catalyst for more success for the club.

First title gives Mullane taste for more ‘champagne’ wins

Mullane’s men edged Abbeyside by three points to collect their first senior crown — and now they are hungry for more glory.

“It has been an exceptional year for me in many ways,” said the former All Star who played a pivotal role in getting the county side to the All-Ireland final last September.

“Today however is a champagne end to the year for me.

“Hopefully there will be more of these days to come in the future”.

He continued: “I knew we would have to battle and to graft in the conditions if we were to win our first senior title and that’s exactly what every member of the team did.

The county star said De La Salle have been ‘seriously underestimated’ by the pundits and used this as a motivational tool.

“We know the feeling of defeat in a final having been there against Ballyguner in 2005,” said Mullane.

“I certainly didn’t want to go through all of that again.”

“Today we answered all of the questions that were put to us and believe me Abbeyside had many searching questions for us.

“But all of the lads, and especially Brian (Phelan) and Kevin (Moran) showed the way like true leaders.”

Mullane said that he has had some great days with the county team winning Munster and National League honours but until now he had never won anything with his club.

“Thank God that has now all changed and I’m looking forward to winning even more in the future,” he said, adding that they would give the Munster club semi-final against Sarsfields of Cork on Sunday a “right lash”.

Goalkeeper Stephen Brenner echoed his captain’s word about this being a memorable moment in the club’s history.

“Its one also that many great club members of the past haven’t lived to witness, but today is as much for them as it is for ourselves,” Brenner said.
