Club duties see Rules players fly in two shifts

ANY players involved in club games on the weekend that the Irish party leaves for Australia (October 18) ‘will be kept at home’ and fly out the following day.

So said Nickey Brennan at yesterday’s squad announcement in Croke Park, where team manager Sean Boylan pointed out that a number of the 27-man group are in this position.

“In relation to Kerry star Tommy Walsh’s availability for the tour he had this to say: “we will have to wait and see how next Sunday goes.”

This was a reference to Kerins O’Rahilly’s county championship quarter-final against Dingle, with a victory for the Tralee side certain to call his involvement in the series seriously into question.

“Tommy has taken to this game like a duck to water. I just hope it goes well for him,’’ added Boylan.

Irish captain Sean Cavanagh’s club Moy (who last won a trophy in 1982) play in the Tyrone intermediate semi-final on Sunday against Derrylahan.

And if they qualify for the final, the County Board is prepared to facilitate him by playing the game next week.

Meanwhile, Kerry have made it clear that they intend sticking rigidly to their championship schedule, which will see semi-finals played on October 26 (two days after the first test in Perth).

The actual squad features no fewer than 17 players new to the series. Eight remain from the 2006 squad.

There are some surpriseinclusions, notably the former Meath goalkeeper David Gallagher, Cork’s John Miskella, Leighton Glynn from Wicklow and Tom Parsons (Mayo).

Unexpectedly, Tyrone star Conor Gormley and Armagh scoring ace Ronan Clarke are only named as stand-by players.
