He has worked in the background for the last 10 years, with Gerald McCarthy, Justin McCarthy and now Davy Fitzgerald.

“I have been waiting for this since 1959. It was one of the happiest days of my life,” he said, crediting the former Clare goalkeeper with bringing ‘a whole new spirit’ to the squad. “He freshened things up. It had gone a bit stale. Justin (McCarthy) did an awful lot for Waterford hurling, but there comes a time when people have to move on.
