Having led 1-11 to 0-6 at the interval, St Anne’s looked in a positive position, but it was five unanswered points in the closing three minutes that handed the reigning champions eventual victory.
Oulart-the-Ballagh started impressively with points from Peter Murphy, John Roche and Eoin Moore having them 0-3 to 0-0 in front after just five minutes, but a 27th-minute goal from Michael O’Keeffe handed the challengers a 1-9 to 0-6 interval lead.
St Anne’s continued to hold the edge for much of the second half, still leading 1-11 to 1-8 at the end of the third quarter, the Oulart goal coming from Rory Jacob who was set up by substitute full-forward anthony O’Leary. With the sides still deadlocked 1-11 each with three minutes remaining it was Oulart who finished with a flourish of scores to gain a valuable opening-round victory.
