Rebel chiefs ring changes for qualifier showdown with Dubs

THE Cork senior hurling selectors have wielded the axe, making five changes from the side that lost to Tipperary in the Munster championship semi-final for Saturday’s All-Ireland qualifier against Dublin at Páirc Uí Chaoimh (5pm).

Two of the changes, in defence, were forced on the selectors after Ronan Curran and Sean Óg Ó hAilpín cried off injured.

Into the side for their championship debuts come Eoin Cadogan of the Douglas club and Kieran McGann, Castlelyons.

Cadogan has been named at right half-back with McGann on the left and John Gardiner in the centre. There are three changes in attack, with Niall McCarthy recalled to centre-forward — and his namesake Timmy on his left.

Neil Ronan has been handed the number 15 jersey with Cathal Naughton on his right and Joe Deane at top of the left. Patrick Cronin, Kevin Canty and Paudie O’Sullivan are the three players to lose out.

There is one change on the Cork minor hurling team from the side which defeated Waterford in the semi-final, for Sunday’s Munster final against Tipperary at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick (2pm).

Paul Haughney has recovered from the illness which kept him out of the semi-final and regains his place at left corner forward in place of Maurice O’Carroll.

An interesting positional switch sees Paul Honohan, who began the championship at full-back against Clare, play midfield against Waterford, now named at full forward.

Other switches sees team captain Daniel Roche move from left half forward out to partner Seamus Farrell at midfield, while Simon O’Brien goes from full forward to left half forward.

The Kerry minor football selectors make one change in personnel from the team which drew with Tipperary in last Sunday’s Munster final, for Saturday’s replay in Ennis (5pm).

Jamie O’Sullivan comes in to partner Wayne Guthrie at midfield and in a number of positional switches, Barry Shanahan moves to full back with Jonathan Lyne coming out to the centre back spot; Daithí Casey goes from midfield to right half forward, and Cian Tobin moves from left corner to left half forward.

Thomas Walshe was among a squad of 26 Wicklow players who turned up for training for the Tommy Murphy Cup competition this week.

This reassuring news quells recent speculation after the midfielder did not line out for Bray Emmets in their first two matches of the local senior football championship.

Walshe has been an integral part of Mick O’Dwyer’s team over the last two seasons since he transferred his allegiance from Carlow to Wicklow.

The Kerry maestro has again handed over the reins to his deputy Arthur French for the duration of the cup competition with Wicklow bidding to put together back-to-back titles after their success in 2007.

They will start the defence of their crown on Saturday week, July 19, with a home game against Waterford at Aughrim.
