The third phase will be concluded on Saturday with Cork playing Dublin at Páirc Uí Chaoimh (5pm) and Limerick meeting Offaly in the Gaelic Grounds (7pm). This is the phase which involves the beaten semi-finalists in Munster and Leinster on a cross-provincial basis.
The two winners will be in action the following weekend against Waterford and Galway, with the pairings to be decided by a draw. And, unlike the earlier phases — where teams drawn out first gained home advantage — the venues for these matches will be decided by the CCCC.
The subsequent phase will involve the two winners going forward to play the provincial losers (Wexford and either Clare or Tipperary) in the All-Ireland quarter-finals.
These games are scheduled to be played on July 27, with a draw determining the pairings — and Croke Park being the probable venue for both.
The All-Ireland semi-finals will be played on August 10 and 17, with Kilkenny first into the action (against either the Munster runners-up or the team which beats them).
Meanwhile, All-Ireland champions Kerry won’t re-enter the championship until the third round of the qualifier series, which is fixed for the opening weekend in August.
The first round games will be played on Saturday week, involving the 16 teams which were eliminated at the quarter and semi-final stages of the respective provincial championships. The eight winning teams will play off in Round 2 on July 27. The All-Ireland quarter-finals are fixed for the weekend of August 9 and 10.
As the dust settles on Sunday’s extraordinary Munster final, a glance at the records would confirm the view that the circumstances in which Cork recovered in such unbelievable style in the second half were without precedent.
Some people have compared it to the 1983 final when Tadhg Murphy’s late goal robbed Mick O’Dwyer of another record of nine provincial wins on the trot.
Interestingly, former Cork hurling manager Jimmy Barry Murphy was full-forward and the team included Jimmy Kerrigan, whose son Paul was introduced as a substitute in the last minute on Sunday — and scored a point.
