Mourne motor past London

DOWN breezed through their opening game of the Christy Ring Cup against a depleted London side at Ruislip on Saturday.

The Mourne men led throughout with the half-forward duo of Paul Braniff and Brendan McGourty accounting for over half of their scores, while substitute Gareth Johnston staked a claim for a starting spot against Carlow with 1-2 in the final six minutes.

The home side battled bravely with Mark Mythen and Ian Walsh both finding the net for the Exiles, but their opponents’ class shone through in the end.

Despite playing against the wind in the opening half Down were in control and although Mythen found the net three minutes before the break they led 0-11 to 1-6 at the break. The visitors made the game safe in the opening 10 minutes of the second half as they registered six unanswered points, and although London gave themselves hope through Walsh’s goal, they only managed to register one single score in the final quarter as Down cruised to victory.
