Perfect launch for Fitzy’s six-shooters

THIS All-Ireland hurling qualifier was the perfect launch of the Davy Fitzgerald management era in Waterford when a six goal blitz crushed the Glensmen and sent more than 6,000 fans home happy from Walsh Park on Saturday.

Except for the opening quarter, when Antrim forced much of the pace, this was as perfect a first day at the office for the former Clare goalkeeping star. Clearly, his own passion and commitment had rubbed off on his charges, and, while he is adamant there is still plenty of room for improvement, the overall performance suggests he has already impacted positively in the job.

“We still have plenty of room for improvement’’, acknowledged Fitzgerald but stressed his delight with his adopted county’s showing in their first outing since defeat by Clare.
