Walsh to take championship bow with Kingdom

CROMANE’s Donncha Walsh makes his championship debut for Kerry in Sunday’s Munster SFC final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, one of four changes for the All-Ireland champions from the side that eased past Clare in the provincial semi final.

All-Ireland U21 winning captain Killian Young is recalled in defence, while Walsh’s Cromane colleague Sean O’Sullivan also starts in the half-forward line. Kieran Donaghy returns to the starting line-up to the exclusion of Tommy Walsh.

Renard man Young missed the opening round against Clare after dislocating his a/c joint in his right shoulder following a collision with Paul Galvin in an A v B challenge game, but is fully recovered and takes over from Tommy Griffin at left half back. Darragh Ó Sé has also overcome a groin problem and plays at midfield.

Cork have not yet given up on captain Graham Canty recovering from his shoulder injury in time to play. “He has some chance. With three days to go he still has a bit of time left,” manager Conor Counihan said yesterday.

Meanwhile Ger Farragher has been recalled to the Galway team in place of Eugene Cloonan for tomorrow’s All-Ireland hurling qualifier against Laois in Pearse Stadium. It is the only change from the side that thrashed Antrim by 26 points last Sunday. An ankle injury has ruled Cloonan out.

Monaghan have made two changes to the side that defeated Fermanagh ahead of tomorrow’s ESB Ulster MFC semi-final meeting with Derry at Omagh. Mark Connolly gets his first start at centre-field, while Kieran Hughes plays at number 11.

The Meath minor football selectors have made three changes to their side for tomorrow’s ESB Leinster semi-final against Longford. All the changes are in defence with Ciaran Lenihan returning after missing out on the quarter-final win over Dublin due to suspension. Tommy Johnson is recalled at centre back while Donnacha Tobin forms part of a new half back line. Mark Battersby moves from defence to corner forward with Harrison Silke losing out.

Laois manager Liam Kearns is sweating on the fitness of Brian McCormack and Brendan Quigley ahead of his side’s All-Ireland qualifier at Longford’s Pearse Park tomorrow week.

Both men are struggling with ankle problems, with McCormack considered the most serious doubt.

Pádraig Clancy will be unavailable. Last season’s captain has decided not to appeal his sending off in the final minutes of the Wexford game. Meanwhile defender Rory Stapleton has left the panel to spend the summer in the US.

In his first game in charge, new Waterford coach Davie Fitzgerald has made three changes in personnel from the team which defeated his native Clare in the opening round of the Munster championship for tomorrow’s All-Ireland qualifier against Antrim in Walsh Park.

Ken McGrath returns after injury to take over the troublesome full back position from Kevin Moran; Shane O’Sullivan who came on for Stephen Molumphy against the Banner men, retains his place, but at right half back, while Eoin Kelly who missed the provincial game through injury, is handed the right half forward position in place of the injured Shane Prendergast.

Positional changes see Tony Browne move from right half back to centre back, Dan Shanahan in at full forward in a swap with Gary Hurney and John Mullane and Eoin McGrath switch corners in the full forward line.
