When you add in Alan O’Neill and Adam Brophy from the previous year, there are a total of eight from the school on the county team, with two Harty Cup and two Croke Cup medals.
Waterford haven’t won the Munster minor title since 1992 when a team that included Paul Flynn defeated Tipperary in a thrilling replay in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Since then they were beaten in two finals by Cork in 1994 and 1995. Much is expected from this outfit, the backbone of which has been involved in some magnificent games with DLS over the last two years.
Importantly, they know how to win, having been involved in a number of very close affairs and with home advantage tomorrow night, they won’t get a better chance to put Cork to the sword.
Stephen O’Keeffe, hotly tipped to be the county senior net-minder in a year or two, Noel Connors, Philip Mahony, Stephen Daniels, Brian O’Sullivan and Barry Coughlan have all won the colleges titles, but there is another step up to county hurling and they’ll need to be at their very best to see off Cork.
Waterford have had potentially very good minor teams in the past but they failed to deliver. There’s a lot of talk about this side, and that brings its own pressure. It remains to be seen if they can step up to the plate.
The Tipperary team to play Clare in tomorrow’s Munster MHC semi-final shows two changes from the side which defeated Limerick in the first round. Denis Maher (Thurles Sarsfields) and James Barry (Upperchurch-Drombane) come in to a new look half-back line alongside Adrian Ryan, with team captain Noel McGrath moving to midfield.
Wexford include two of last Sunday’s winning senior team for tomorrow night’s Leinster U21 hurling championship semi-final clash with Offaly in Birr. David Redmond is included in midfield, while PJ Nolan fills his regular left half-forward role.
