O’Brien, Callinan get nod to face Cork

TIPPERARY manager Liam Sheedy introduces two newcomers to the heat of Munster senior hurling championship action for Sunday’s semi-final showdown with arch-rivals Cork at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Conor O’Brien has been handed the number four jersey ahead of the experienced Declan Fanning, while Seamus Callinan leads the Tipp attack from centre forward. The Drom & Inch youngster has been showing tremendous form this season.

Eamon Corcoran is fully recovered and lines out in his customary right half back position, while Lar Corbett, who was also troubled with injury, has been named at full-forward.

Tyrone’s Brian McGuigan makes his first championship appearance since the 2005 All-Ireland win over Kerry when he starts against Down in Sunday’s Ulster SFC clash with Down.

McGuigan, recovered from a catalogue of career-threatening injuries, will be reunited with his famous number 11 shirt for the Healy Park tie.

And there’s a welcome return for skipper Brian Dooher, who also starts in the half forward line, having missed the entire NFL due to injury.

Damien Healy and Dessie Dolan are fully recovered from injury and have been named on the Westmeath team to play Offaly in the Leinster semi-final at Tullamore tomorrow. Manager Tomás Ó Flatharta has named the same team which defeated Longford in their previous outing.

Aidan Carr, son of Down manager Ross, makes his championship debut at right half back for Sunday’s Ulster SFC quarter-final against Tyrone in Omagh. He is one of three debutants, the others are Luke Howard at right corner back, and John Fegan at right half forward.

Meanwhile, Kerry U21 captain Killian Young has emerged as a serious injury doubt for Kerry’s Munster SFC opener against Clare on Sunday week. The Renard man popped the A/C joint on his right shoulder in an accidental clash with Paul Galvin in the Kerry Gold v Blues game at Lixnaw last Sunday and adds another name to a lengthy list.

Clare football captain Michael O’Shea is battling to be ready for the Munster semi-final against Kerry. The centre-forward missed the first-round win over Waterford but has returned to light training this week and is hoping to be fit for the clash with the All-Ireland champions.
