Counihan names 11 of the old guard

NEW Cork manager Conor Counihan has unveiled his first team to play Roscommon in the Allianz NFL at Kiltoom on Sunday and includes 11 of the team defeated by Kerry in last season’s All-Ireland final.

The men out are corner back Michael Shields, who is currently in Australia; wing forward Conor McCarthy and the Nemo Rangers duo of Derek Kavanagh and James Masters, both club-tied at the moment.

Diarmuid Duggan of Ilen Rovers comes into the full-back line in place of Shields. Anthony Lynch returns at left half back, with John Miskella taking over the right half forward position from Conor McCarthy.

Alan O’Connor, from the St. Colm’s club in West Cork, is named as new midfield partner to Nicholas Murphy in place of Kavanagh, while Daniel Goulding occupies Master’s right corner forward berth.

Graham Canty has been appointed captain. He replaces Derek Kavanagh and becomes the first captain under the new system whereby the county champions won’t pick the Cork captain.

County Board delegates voted at the end of last year to remove the bye-law whereby the senior county champions had the right to nominate the captain and were also able to nominate a selector.

Kerry have made two changes in defence and two up front from the team that defeated Tyrone for Sundays Division 1 league clash with Derry at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney.

Kieran Cremin of Dr Crokes takes over the goalkeeping position from Diarmuid Murphy and Daniel Bohane of Austin Stacks replaces Killian Young at left half back.

Darren O’Sullivan replaces David Moran at right half forward, while Kenmare’s Paul O’Connor fills the top of the left position vacated by the injured Declan O’Sullivan.

Derry have named the same side that defeated Laois in the last round which means team captain Kieran McCloy continues on the bench.

Tyrone manager Mickey Harte has made four changes for Sundays’ NFL clash with Galway at Pearse Stadium. Ryan McMenamin makes his first appearance of the season, while Sean Cavanagh make his first start as the Red Hand injury jinx begins to ease.

Goalkeeper Jonathan Curran is an NFL debutante, replacing Pascal McConnell, and becoming the team’s third net minder in as many games. Ryan Mellon come into the attack, while the players to lose out are Pascal McConnell, Philip Jordan, Colm Cavanagh and Niall Gormley.

Following their fine opening in the competition Longford have named an unchanged side for their home game with Fermanagh at Pearse Park on Sunday.

Team captain Darren Rooney switches from centre-back to full-back for Laois’s Division 1 tie with Mayo under lights at Portlaoise tomorrow night.

Also from the team defeated by Derry last time out, Colm Kelly moves from defence to centre-forward.

Mayo have been forced to delay selection of their side because of a catalogue of injuries surrounding Chris Barrett, Billy Joe Padden, Mickey Mullins, Keith Higgins and Barry Moran.

Cavan, who lost to Monaghan in their last game have rung the changes for Dublin’s visit to Breffni Park tomorrow night. Ronan Flanagan takes over the centre-back position from John McCutcheon, ruled out with a broken arm. Dermot McCabe and Mark McKeever form a new midfield partnership in place of Declan Gaffney and Lorcan Mulvey, while Sean Brady is preferred to Eddie O’Reilly up front.
