Canning doubtas Portumna prepare for club semi-final

JOE CANNING must be considered extremely doubtful for Portumna’s All-Ireland Club SHC semi-final against Loughmore-Castleiney on Sunday week.

The Galway youngster pulled up with a torn hamstring in yesterday’s Fitzgibbon Cup tie between LIT and UL after 15 minutes, and while he stayed on for another 10 minutes, he was clearly struggling.

Ice packs were applied to the injury immediately but he said after his side’s thrilling draw, ‘‘that it wasn’t looking good for the club semi-final”.

“It looks a bad tear but I’ll know more in the morning after I see the specialist. Right now I’m keeping my finders crossed that is not too serious and that it will respond to treatment,’’ he said.

Canning’s LIT play their quarter-final clash with UCD next Wednesday. He had been shaping up as man-of-the-match yesterday after scoring 1-3 in the opening quarter.

Meanwhile, Despite their big win over Offaly in the opening round of the Allianz NHL Tipperary have made four changes for their mouth-watering clash with Limerick at Semple Stadium, Thurles on Sunday.

Conor O’Brien comes in for Paul Curran at corner back, James Woodlock is preferred to Joe Ceaser at midfield, Seamus Butler takes over the left half forward berth from John O’Brien, while Willie Ryan gets the left corner forward position ahead of Pa Bourke.

Galway introduce Kerril Wade at left half forward in place of Niall Healy for their League game with Offaly at Birr on Sunday.

Laois, comprehensively defeated by Limerick in their opening NHL game, make two enforced changes in defence for Sunday’s away game to Clare at Cusack Park, Ennis.

Both Eddie Brown and Philip Russell are both ruled out because of injury and drafted into the side are James Walsh at right corner back and Canice Coonan at right half back.

Mayo make two changes in defence from the team that lost to Derry for Sunday’s NFL tie with title-holders Donegal at Castlebar on Sunday.

Sean Nallon takes over from Dave Clarke in goal, while Tommy Cunniffe replaces Colin Moran at right corner back.

Pádraig Joyce returns to the Galway team following suspension for their game against Kildare at Pearse Stadium on Sunday. The former All-Ireland winning captain has been named on the 40.

Longford captain Liam Keenan who missed the O’Byrne cup final against Dublin has lost his battle to be back for Sunday’s NFL game against Leitrim at Pearse Park.

Keenan is suffering from a hamstring tear which he picked up in his sides defeat to Wexford. The injury was exacerbated by the fact that he played on that day despite feeling the tear. Kevin Mulligan starts ahead of Padraig Berry who was forced to retire in the game against Dublin with a dead leg.

Waterford have made four changes at the back from the team that lost to Wicklow for their visit to Nowlan Park to take on Kilkenny tomorrow.

Tom Wall takes over from Stephen Enright in goal. Justin Walsh comes in a right full back in place of Eddie Rockett, while Pat Dunphy from the Tramore club makes his senior debut at left corner back.

Shane Briggs, who started at left corner back last time out now moves to centre back to the exclusion of Eamonn Walsh.

Tipperary football manager John Evans introduces Daryil Darcy and Colin Morrissey in place of injured duo Mark Peters and Niall Curran for his side’s League game with Offaly under lights at Tullamore tomorrow night.
