Battling Brogan’s snatch draw

St Brogan’s, Bandon 0-14 Borrisokane, Tipperary 1-11

Trailing by four points with time running out, it looked like the end of the road for St Brogan’s. But the lion hearts of Bandon stormed back and snatched a last-gasp equaliser when outstanding centre-back Thomas Harrington converted a long-range free a minute from the end of normal time.

It was a dramatic finale to a final which saw the sides level on five occasions in the first half. Then Borrisokane, who had earlier missed a penalty when full-forward Rory Gleeson blasted over, edged their way into a one point lead at the interval when Chris Doughan hit over seconds from the break.

Turning to play with the wind, the ball appeared to be firmly in St Brogan’s court. However, they reckoned without the absolute heroics of Borrisokane’s marvellous goalkeeper Cian Hayes who produced a series of wonder saves to keep St Brogan’s at bay .

With the much vaunted St Brogan’s attack, apart from full-forward Eoin Kelly and to a lesser degree wing forward Roy Payne, failing to live up to its reputation, Borrisokane opened up a five-point gap when wing-forward Eoin O’Meara set up corner-forward David Morkan for a gem of a goal in the 42nd minute.

Despite the best efforts of Kelly, who scored six points from frees and great performances from centre-back Harrington and midfielder Maurice Sexton, St Brogan’s continued to struggle and Borrisokane, with Rory Gleeson again to the fore, held a clear advantage entering the closing quarter.

They were still four points ahead with five minutes remaining and St Brogan’s looked out for the count. However, amazingly, they pulled a draw out of the fire with four unanswered points from Sexton, Payne, Kelly and Harrington.
