At the first time of asking, Moyle Rovers were justifiably crowned champions on a day when nothing went right for Barryroe.
The game was only three minutes old when a dropping ball from Moyle Rovers’ midfielder Peter Acheson ended up in the Cork side’s net, an absolute disaster for Barryroe considering they had started with a strong wind advantage.
Despite coming back to level in the seventh minute with two pointed frees from wing forward Kieran Griffin and a point from play by full-forward Padraig Collins, they never really recovered from that early setback.
Beaten hands down at midfield by the powerful and stylish partnership of Martin Dunne and Peter Acheson, Barryroe, also contesting their first final, laboured all through. And when they did create chances they found Moyle Rovers’ goalkeeper Ian Browne unbeatable.
A brother of the celebrated Declan, who scored two sweet points from the left wing in the opening half, he made two super saves to deny Barryroe corner-forward Denis Harrington when the Cork side were in desperate need of a boost.
Moyle Rovers led by 1-5 to 0-6 at the interval and Barryroe, turning to play into the teeth of a strong wind, were left with an Everest to climb.
Another pointed free by Griffin a minute after the resumption left the bare minimum between, but then Barryroe were hit with another sucker punch.
Wing forward Barry Whelan, who had an outstanding game when moved into the right corner, rifled home a great left-handed stroke to the corner of the net. Martin Dunne followed with a point and Moyle Rovers, now leading by 2-6 to 0-7, already had a firm on the cup.
It was all over before the end of the third quarter. Barryroe had Adrian Fleming sent off for a second yellow card offence and before the West Cork side’s centre-forward had reached the dug out, Barry Whelan pounced to score his second goal and seal Moyle Rovers’ famous victory.
