Hurley goal sets up Barryroe for victory

Barryroe (Cork) 2-14 Meelick (Clare) 0-5

A stunning goal from wing Ciaran Hurley after eight minutes set up the Cork champions for a comprehensive triumph, sealed with another picture goal from corner forward Denis Harrington five minutes from the end.

But for some outstanding saves by Meelick goalkeeper James Duffy, who denied both Harrington and Padraig Collins in quick succession immediately after the resumption, Barryroe’s victory would have assumed even more handsome proportions.

However, with Jason Fleming a colossus at centre-back, Kevin McCarthy excelling at midfield and both Denis Harrington and Adrian Fleming sparkling up front, Barryroe strolled to a provincial semi-final meeting with Abbeyside of Waterford next Sunday at a Cork venue. Early points from Kevin McCarthy and Kieran Griffin settled Barryroe and although wing forward Conor Dolan got one back for Meelick, it was immediately evident who held the whip hand in this encounter.

Meelick had absolutely no answer to the power of their opponents, nor to Hurley’s great strike when he received a peach of a pass from Harrington.

A litany of points from Adrian Fleming, the outstanding Harrington, Kieran Griffin, Kevin McCarthy, John O’Donovan and wing back Adrian White powered an exceptionally strong Barryroe side into a 1-9 to 0-1 lead before Dolan had Meelick’s second score of the game. The Banner side needed more than the aid of a fresh breeze in the second half. Despite goalkeeper Duffy’s heroics, Barryroe still succeeded in holding a commanding grip on the proceedings and led by 1-11 to 0-4 before Meelick were awarded a penalty with 15 minutes remaining. Barryroe goalkeeper Gerard Keohane was penalised for lying on the ball but made amends by saving Conor Dalton’s penalty conversion attempt.
