Tobin inspires brilliant Brendan’s

A SIX-GOAL bonanza for St Brendan’s College, Killarney saw Coláiste An Spioraid Naoimh completely collapsed in yesterday’s Corn Ui Mhuirí Group game at Carrigadrohid.

Three goals from left corner-forward Cian Tobin inside the opening 20 minutes laid the foundation for St Brendan’s facile win and left their Cork opponents reeling.

Tobin expertly slotted home two penalties in the opening quarter and the skilful Spa clubman completed his hat trick with a superb third in the 19th minute.

With wing forward James O’Donoghue also in scintillating form, St Brendan’s monopolised the game and Spioraid Naoimh’s only response in the first half was an early pointed free from team captain Paul Honohan.

Tobin scored 3-2 and O’Donoghue tacked on four points as St Brendan’s thundered their way into an interval lead of 3-7 to 0-1 to leave Spioraid Naoimh side with an Everest to climb.

Indeed with outstanding midfielder Kevin O’Regan lording it at midfield after the resumption, St Brendan’s swamped their Cork opponents.

St Brendan’s increased their lead to 17 points before Spioraid Naoimh had their second score of a miserable hour when centre-forward Ian Wycherley kicked over in the 40th minute.

But St Brendan’s were showing no mercy and hammered home their superiority with a litany of scores. Substitute Keith O’Leary pounced to score their fourth goal with a great drive in the 43rd minute and he added another five minutes later to leave a huge gap between the sides.

A sixth goal from another substitute, Kieran Slattery, a minute from the end of normal time, brought the curtin down on St Brendan’s resounding triumph.
