Budds turns on the power to light up Youghal

SCORING magic from full-forward Joe Budds and some class defending by centre-back Brian Collins wereinstrumental in Pobalscoil Na Trionóide’s narrow victory overGlanmire CC at Caherlag yesterday as the Youghal side bounced back from an earlier defeat by Templemore to keep their Dr Harty Cup ambitions alive.

For Glanmire its all over, following an earlier defeat by Doon CBS, but they have only themselves to blame yesterday for they were far too wasteful up front, with Budds giving an exhibition at the other end.

The Killeagh St Ita’s star scored 1-11 of his sides’ total in an almost flawless display of accuracy. And, with his clubmate Collins a colossus at the other end, Glanmire suffered big time.

Glanmire may have been the better side in the opening half, but they had difficulty putting the ball over the bar and were grateful for their two goals.

The first came from Martin Hickey in the eighth minute, when Youghal keeper Pádraig O’Brien failed to hold his long delivery. But it was level pegging after the opening quarter, 1-0 to 0-3, with radar like Budds popping over three frees. Youghal were proving no pushovers and with Collins simply majestic at centre-back they stuck to their task well. But they were stung by a second Glanmire goal in the 17th minute when Jack Sheehan picked up a delightful ball from Gary Gray and he made no mistake.

Only Eoin O’Sullivan and Hickey could put the ball over the bar for wasteful Glanmire and with Budds turning it on at the other end, Youghal only trailed at the break 2-2 to 0-6.

Glanmire continued to waste good chances after the restart and although Sheehan had a fabulous point, when he doubled on O’Sullivan’s free, it was Youghal who were playing the clever hurling, with Budds still a huge thorn in the Glanmire defence.

And the full-forward was in for a vital goal in the 41s minute when he picked up a delightful ball from midfield and gave Glanmire keeper Cormac Dooley no chance. And Budds continued to dissect the posts from play and frees as Youghal led 1-10 to 2-4 entering the final quarter.

In fairness to Glanmire they tried hard to get back into it and when centre-back Cillian Brosnan got their third goal late on, after good wok by Sheehan, they trailed by just a point. Eoin O’Sullivan did have a late chance to save the game for Glanmire but came up short leaving Youghal with a chance of progressing if they can beat Doon CBS in their final game.
