Corca Dhuibhne do enough to hold off Flannan’s fightback

Pobal Scoil Chorca Dhuibhne 2-10 St Flannan’s 1-7

A stylish performance, highlighted by some tremendous individual displays from Eoin Mac Gearailt, Colm Ó Muircheartaigh, Seamus Mac Gearailt and Cathal Ó Fiannachta, powered the Dingle students into a commanding 11-point lead entering the closing quarter.

But fighting back bravely, St Flannan’s finished with a flourish to put a different complexion on the game.

After just three minutes St Flannan’s centre-forward Pádraig McMahon had a blistering drive deflected out for a 45 by goalkeeper Tomás Mac an Piarais and from the resultant kick Sean Crotty punched over the lead point.

Corner forward Darragh Sexton added another from a free. It proved to be a false dawn for the Ennis side however.

With Eoin Mac Gearailt and Ó Muircheartaigh forming a splendid midfield partnership and front runners Seamus MacGearailt and O Fiannachta destroying Flannan’s defensive cover, Corca Dhuibhne excelled.

Eoin Mac Gearailt set up his namesake Seamus in the ninth minute for a vital goal and with their centre-forward adding three points from frees, Corca Dhuibhne were on a roll and led by 1-6 to 0-3 at the interval.

A six-point gap still divided them after the resumption before midfielder Colm Ó Muircheartaigh blasted home a second goal from point blank range in the 38th minute and when Corca Dhuibhne increased their advantage to 11 points with a quarter remaining, it was curtains for St Flannan’s.

But two points without reply from Luke O’Dea and Fergus Ryan, followed by a goal from captain Padraig McMahon set the scene for an exciting St Flannan’s comeback.

And the renowned hurling specialist nearly snatched another at the finish but Ryan’s attempt was once again deflected around the post for a 45 by Corca Dhuibhne goalkeeper Mac an Piarais.
