Speculation surrounds Cusack Park future

THE future use of Cusack Park in Ennis as Clare GAA’s main county ground remains shrouded in mystery as the County Board Executive continues to discuss the proposed sale of the ground to developers.

News of their deliberations was expected to be given to club delegates at a special meeting of the Board last night, but that report has been deferred.

And, the speculation is that an announcement may not be made until the October meeting.

The understanding is that the Board sub-committee, which has been handling this affair has yet to decide whether to recommend a move to a greenfield site or to upgrade the stadium.

In the event the Board decides to move, reports indicate a preference for a consortium which includes well-known builder Bernard McNamara. As part of a possible deal, a new stadium would be provided in Doora, along with ancillary facilities and offices.

However, one perceived impediment to such a proposal would be a difficulty over public access on big match days.

Meanwhile, the officers may be in a position to make a recommendation on the appointment of new football management, but they may not be able to do the same for hurling at the rescheduled meeting.

Galway man Frank O’Doherty is being recommended to take charge of the county side.
